Nestled within the 1,293 acre Forest Park in St. Louis, the internationally renowned Saint Louis Zoo houses one of the world’s largest free-flight aviaries and educational exhibits. At 228 feet long, 84 feet wide and 50 feet high, the 1904 World’s Fair Flight Cage was the largest aviary ever built at the time. The Flight Cage was the Smithsonian Institute’s exhibit at the fair and the landmark structure served as the impetus for the development of the Saint Louis Zoo in 1913.

Our team aligned the exhibit design with the Saint Louis Zoo’s mission of “conserving animals and their habitats through outstanding educational and recreational experiences, research, and animal management.” The Cypress Swamp often provides visitors with their first chance to experience a swamp environment and to learn about sustainability and conservation. The exhibit educates visitors about the swamp’s ability to preserve our ecology by functioning as a natural, biological filter system, and has brought new vitality and life forms to the 1904 World’s Fair Flight Cage.
