Bryan Hall and Millstone Plaza serves as the North Gateway to Washington University campus. The vibrant pedestrian corridor is part of the Centennial Greenway regional system, linking the community to Washington University. The complex project called for separation of pedestrians and bicyclists as more that 6000 daily trips are made across the expressway and light rail transit system. The challenging grade changes called for a series of dynamic accessible ramps and stairs that welcome students, faculty and visitors to the campus. The site design was a collaborative effort with SWT Design as the site lead planner and landscape architect along with ASG and other partners.

The new gateway serves as a popular setting for several pedestrian nodes, bicycle parking, plazas culminating on a sculpture by Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle’s Weather Field No. 2, 2018. Careful attention to detail for bicycle safety and movement was extensively employed throughout the corridor to help with pedestrian safety and clear wayfinding. Native landscape, tree canopy cover and improved stormwater management provided improvements to the surrounding neighborhoods and campus. The new inviting gateway is a great success welcoming all who come to the campus or simply want to enjoy a walk or bike ride thru the beautiful Danforth Campus.
